Church Square

Steeped in South African history, Pretoria’s Church Square is a vibrant hub where the past and present collide. Once the center of religious life, it’s now a cultural melting pot, brimming with architectural gems and significant landmarks. Take a stroll through the square and soak in the sights, from the imposing statue of President Paul Kruger to the 19th-century buildings showcasing various architectural styles.

  1. Churchless Square: Despite its name, Church Square has no church! Three churches once graced its center, but the last one was demolished in 1905.
  2. Architectural Feast: History buffs will love the surrounding buildings. Admire the grandeur of the Palace of Justice, where the Rivonia Trial took place, or spot the Tudor-styled Tudor Chambers.
  3. Statues Speak History: The imposing statue of President Paul Kruger commemorates the “Old Lion” of South Africa. Look for the statues of Boer soldiers, too, all significant figures in the nation’s past.
  4. Fountain Found a New Home: The ornate fountain that once stood in the square’s center can now be found at the Pretoria Zoo, a delightful spot to visit after exploring Church Square.
  5. Daytime Delight: While Church Square offers a glimpse into Pretoria’s heart, it’s recommended to visit during the day for optimal safety and a more vibrant atmosphere.
