  • The right airport depends on your reserve and lodge
  • Fly-in is standard at the luxury tier
  • Soft-sided luggage under a weight limit is the norm
  • Schedules change; live confirmation matters more than static advice

Flying into a Greater Kruger safari is the fastest, most comfortable way to arrive on short trips and the default at the luxury tier. Understanding which airport serves which reserves helps you plan realistically without falling into the trap of picking the wrong airport for your lodge.

> **A note on schedules:** flight schedules, aircraft types and airline availability change frequently. This guide focuses on the airports themselves and how to think about the fly-in choice; live schedules should always be confirmed with your consultant on your specific dates.

## Skukuza (SZK)

Skukuza sits inside Kruger National Park, in the south. It is the closest commercial airport to most Sabi Sand lodges, MalaMala and the southern Kruger camps. Scheduled flights operate between Johannesburg (OR Tambo) and Skukuza; the flight itself is typically around an hour. Onward transfers to your lodge are usually short — 30 to 60 minutes — and are often included in your lodge package.

## Nelspruit / Kruger Mpumalanga International (MQP)

KMIA is south of Kruger, near the town of Mbombela (Nelspruit). It is the main commercial airport for the region, handles scheduled flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town, and serves the same southern reserves as Skukuza plus some of the fenced private reserves. Onward transfer times from KMIA to most Sabi Sand and southern lodges run around 90 minutes.

## Hoedspruit (HDS)

Hoedspruit serves the northern Greater Kruger reserves — Timbavati, Klaserie, Kapama and Thornybush especially. If your lodge is in one of these reserves, HDS is often the closest and most sensible airport. Transfer times from HDS to the northern reserves are typically 30 to 60 minutes.

## Lodge airstrips and charter flights

Most Greater Kruger luxury lodges have their own airstrip and can be reached by chartered light aircraft. Charter flights are used to move between lodges, to connect to fly-in circuits that include Botswana or the Waterberg, or to arrive directly from Cape Town without a scheduled-flight change. Charters cap luggage tightly — typically 20kg soft-sided per person — and require a soft duffel rather than a hard case.

## When fly-in makes sense

On any trip of three or four days, fly-in earns its premium. The time saved is real — six hours of driving each way turns into an hour of flying — and the total experience of the trip is usually more relaxed. On longer trips (five days or more), the case for fly-in weakens; the road transfer costs proportionally less time and is often more comfortable than another airport queue.

## Luggage on light aircraft

Almost every light-aircraft transfer to a lodge airstrip has a strict soft-sided luggage requirement, typically 20kg per person. Hard suitcases are usually not permitted. If you are combining lodges with charter transfers, plan luggage from the beginning of the trip — including your Cape Town wardrobe.

## Meet and greet

Wanderer arranges meet-and-greet at every airport in the fly-in chain. A named representative meets you at arrivals, handles your onward transfer and hands you to your lodge on arrival. On short trips, this alone justifies fly-in for many guests.

## Wanderer expert recommendation

Match the airport to the lodge, not the other way around. Choose the reserve and lodge first; the correct airport almost always follows. Read our [fly-in Kruger safari guide](/kruger-safari/knowledge-hub/article/fly-in-kruger-safari) for the full fly-in itinerary planning.

Frequently asked questions

Which airport is closest to Sabi Sand?+

Skukuza (SZK) is inside the park and closest for many Sabi Sand lodges; KMIA (MQP) is the main commercial alternative. Your consultant will match the airport to your specific lodge and dates.

Which airport serves Timbavati?+

Hoedspruit (HDS) is typically the closest and most sensible airport for Timbavati, Klaserie, Kapama and Thornybush lodges.

Can I fly directly from Cape Town to Kruger?+

Yes — scheduled flights operate on some routes, and charter flights are available for luxury travellers. Confirm live schedules with your consultant.

How long is the flight from Johannesburg?+

Around one hour to Skukuza, KMIA and Hoedspruit. Add transfer time to the lodge on either side.

Is fly-in worth the extra cost?+

On short trips (three or four days), usually yes — the time saved is significant. On longer trips the case for fly-in weakens.

What luggage can I bring on a light aircraft?+

Typically 20kg of soft-sided luggage per person on light-aircraft transfers to lodge airstrips. Hard cases are usually not permitted.

Does Wanderer arrange meet and greet?+

Yes. A named representative meets you at arrivals at every airport in your fly-in chain and hands you to your lodge on arrival.

Can I combine a scheduled flight with a road transfer?+

Yes — fly one way, drive the other is a common structure that gets you the scenic road experience and the time savings of a flight.

What time do scheduled flights typically depart?+

Most Kruger routes have morning and afternoon options, but exact times change frequently. Your consultant confirms live schedules on your dates.

Is Hoedspruit worth the extra cost over KMIA?+

If your lodge is in Timbavati, Klaserie, Kapama or Thornybush, yes — Hoedspruit saves an hour of road transfer compared with KMIA.

Are charter flights safe?+

Yes — charter operators in southern Africa follow strict safety standards. Your consultant recommends operators we have used repeatedly.

Can Wanderer book my international flights?+

We focus on the safari itinerary and internal flights. International flights are usually best booked directly or via your preferred agent, but we can advise on connections that work with your Kruger arrival window.
