Best alternatives
Madikwe, Pilanesberg (malaria-free)
Transfer

  • Guests with mobility considerations
  • Wheelchair-assisted travellers
  • Travellers with chronic conditions requiring planning
  • Companions of accessible travellers
Key takeaways
  • Accessibility varies widely lodge by lodge — no Greater Kruger reserve has a single standard
  • Madikwe is malaria-free and has stronger accessible inventory than most
  • Private chauffeur transfers are generally easier than fly-in for accessibility needs
  • Always verify specifics with the lodge before confirming a booking

Accessible safari planning is the area where the gap between marketing copy and reality is widest. Many lodges describe themselves as 'accessible' when what they mean is that they have a ramp from the car park to reception. This guide is intentionally cautious — we'd rather a guest arrive to a setup that works than to a beautiful camp they cannot move through.

## What 'accessible' actually requires

**Step-free entry** to the suite, the main lodge area and the vehicle. **Doorway widths** that accommodate wheelchairs (usually 80cm minimum). **Roll-in showers** rather than baths with grab rails alone. **Ramped pathways** between suites and main areas, ideally with handrails. **Adapted vehicles** for guests who cannot step up unaided — these are rare in the Greater Kruger but exist at a handful of camps. **Medical proximity** — a clear evacuation plan, helipad access, and SAA Netcare 911 cover via the lodge.

## Lodges that adapt well

In the Greater Kruger: Kapama River Lodge has step-free suites and assisted access. Mdluli Safari Lodge has accessible safari units. Several Lion Sands suites can be configured for wheelchair access. Thornybush Game Lodge offers adapted family units. Each of these requires a pre-trip verification call we make on your behalf.

In Madikwe (malaria-free): Tau Game Lodge has dedicated accessible chalets. Madikwe Hills has adapted units. Madikwe is often the better-fit reserve for guests with significant mobility considerations because the lodge inventory is more consistently planned for accessibility.

## The vehicle question

Standard safari vehicles require a step up of approximately 60–80cm to the lowest seat — significantly more than a standard SUV. For guests who cannot manage this with assistance, a handful of lodges run modified vehicles with hydraulic lifts or wider steps. These need to be booked at the lodge-selection stage, never assumed.

## Transfer choices

Private chauffeur road transfer is usually the easier option than fly-in for accessibility needs — no airport stairs, no airbridge transitions, no small-aircraft seat constraints. We can specify a vehicle with the right step height and a chauffeur briefed on assistance protocols. Fly-in is possible to scheduled airports (Skukuza, Nelspruit) where wheelchair-assistance services exist, but small charter aircraft into lodge airstrips are usually not the right answer.

## Sample accessible safari structure

Day 1: Private chauffeur transfer with adapted vehicle, accessible lodge in Kapama or Madikwe, lunch on arrival, afternoon drive in adapted vehicle.

Day 2: Morning drive at gentler pace, brunch, in-suite rest or spa midday, late afternoon drive.

Day 3: Optional bush walk (mobility permitting), bush breakfast, sundowner.

Day 4: Final morning drive, transfer back to Johannesburg.

## Medical planning

Speak to your doctor at least eight weeks before the trip. Bring all medications in original packaging with a personal medical letter. Comprehensive travel insurance with explicit evacuation cover is essential. We provide the lodge with a medical brief on your behalf (with your consent) so the staff are prepared from the moment you arrive.

## What we will not promise

We will not claim a lodge is accessible without verification. We will not recommend a fly-in itinerary that compromises safety. We will not steer you toward a camp that doesn't suit your specific needs just because it suits ours. Honest planning produces a successful safari; over-promising produces an exhausted, frustrated trip. Our job is to make sure you arrive at a lodge that works.

## Wanderer expert recommendation

If significant mobility considerations are in play, start with Madikwe rather than the Greater Kruger. The accessible inventory is more consistent, the reserve is malaria-free, and the fly-in is into a single accessible airport (Gateway International, near Madikwe). Pair with a private chauffeur from Johannesburg and a four-night stay at one lodge for the calmest possible experience.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Kruger safari accessible for wheelchair users?+

At a handful of lodges with verification, yes. Many Greater Kruger lodges have step-up architecture that limits accessibility. Madikwe is often the better-fit reserve for wheelchair users. Always verify specifics before booking.

Are safari vehicles wheelchair accessible?+

Standard vehicles require a step up of 60–80cm and are not directly wheelchair accessible. A small number of lodges run modified vehicles with hydraulic lifts; book these explicitly.

Which lodges work best for mobility considerations?+

In Greater Kruger: Kapama River Lodge, Mdluli Safari Lodge, selected Lion Sands suites, Thornybush Game Lodge. In Madikwe: Tau Game Lodge, Madikwe Hills. All require pre-trip verification.

What about visual or hearing accessibility?+

Safari is highly visual but guides describe sightings in detail. For visually impaired guests, sensory experiences — sounds, smells, walking surfaces — work beautifully. For hearing-impaired guests, written sighting notes and visual cues can be arranged.

Should I bring my own equipment?+

Lightweight wheelchairs, portable shower seats, medication pumps and continence supplies should travel with you. Lodges cannot stock specialist equipment.

Is travel insurance different for accessible travel?+

Yes — make sure your policy explicitly covers your specific conditions and includes medical evacuation. Some standard policies exclude pre-existing conditions; declare everything.

Can I bring a carer?+

Yes — we strongly recommend it for guests with significant mobility needs. Carers travel at standard guest rates, with appropriate room configurations.

Is fly-in or road transfer better for accessible travel?+

Usually private chauffeur road transfer. No airport stairs, no airbridge transitions, more space for equipment. Fly-in to Skukuza or Nelspruit is possible with assistance pre-booked.

What if my situation changes between booking and travel?+

Tell us immediately. We work with flexible cancellation policies wherever possible and can re-plan with a different lodge or reserve if needed.

Do lodges have medical evacuation cover?+

Most leading lodges have helipads and SAA Netcare 911 cover for emergency response. Your travel insurance should provide the international evacuation layer. We brief the lodge medical team in advance with your consent.
