  • Ideal for families with mixed ages
  • Worth the premium for photographers and serious wildlife enthusiasts

A private safari isn't about exclusivity for its own sake. It is about the small set of decisions that, made together, change the experience: when you leave for the morning drive, how long you stay on a sighting, whether you skip the second drive of the day for a long lunch, whether you go on foot. On a shared vehicle these decisions are made by consensus. On a private vehicle they are made by you.

## Who a private safari is for

Families with children of mixed ages who need flexible timings. Photographers who want to stay on a single sighting for an hour. Multi-generational groups where some guests want a slower pace than others. Celebrities, executives and VIPs who value discretion. Honeymooners on a longer trip who want the privacy. Private incentive groups travelling together.

## What 'private' actually includes

**Private vehicle.** Your party only, with the front passenger seat empty so the guide and tracker have full visibility. Most reserves cap private vehicles at six guests; some at eight.

**Private guide and tracker.** Dedicated for your stay. They learn your interests by lunchtime on day one and the experience tunes around you from there.

**Flexible timings.** Skip the morning drive for a sleep-in. Take an extra-long lunch. Add a midday drive in green season. Choose to stay on a leopard sighting instead of moving to the next radio call. Walk for a morning instead of drive.

**Bush experiences on demand.** Bush breakfasts, sundowner stops at unusual locations, picnic lunches in the field, walking safaris led by armed trails guides.

## What a private safari costs

Most leading lodges charge a private-vehicle premium of 25–50% on top of the shared rate, sometimes more in peak season. The premium falls per person as the group size rises — a family of six on a private vehicle pays a very different per-person premium to a couple. At the ultra-luxury end (Singita, Cheetah Plains, Lion Sands private villas) a private vehicle is included by default.

## Best reserves for a private safari

Sabi Sand for the predator density and leopard photography. MalaMala for the famously open traversing. Timbavati for the wilder feel and stronger value. Manyeleti and Klaserie are excellent value with private-vehicle availability at a lower base rate.

## Sample 4-night private safari structure

Day 1: Fly in, lunch, afternoon drive with your private guide.

Day 2: Long morning drive with bush breakfast, midday rest, late afternoon drive.

Day 3: Walking safari with armed trails guide in the morning, full afternoon drive.

Day 4: Photographic morning drive (early start, long stops), bush lunch, sundowner drive.

Day 5: Final morning drive, breakfast, fly out.

## Wanderer expert recommendation

For groups of four or more, the per-person premium for a private vehicle is often smaller than expected. Calculate the per-person uplift before you decide — for many family groups the answer is to upgrade. Frequently asked questions

What does a private Kruger safari actually mean?+

Your party books a vehicle (and usually a guide) exclusively for the duration of your stay, with no shared seats and no shared schedule. Game-drive timings, route choices and sighting durations are all set by you.

How much extra does a private vehicle cost?+

Typically 25–50% on top of the shared rate, falling per person as your group grows. At the ultra-luxury end, private vehicles are often included.

Do I get a private guide as well?+

Yes — the private vehicle premium usually includes a dedicated guide and tracker for your stay.

How many guests can join a private vehicle?+

Most reserves cap at six adults on a private vehicle, some at eight. Family vehicles with children may allow more.

Is a private safari worth it for photographers?+

Almost always. The ability to stay on a sighting, position the vehicle for the light, and skip drives that don't suit your interests is worth the premium many times over.

Can I book an exclusive-use lodge?+

Yes — several leading camps offer exclusive use for private groups, typically priced at three to eight times the standard nightly rate. Sole-use is ideal for multi-generational families, weddings and corporate retreats.

Is a private safari only for ultra-luxury budgets?+

No. Manyeleti, Klaserie and several Timbavati lodges offer private-vehicle options at meaningfully lower base rates than the Sabi Sand classics.

Can I add walking safaris on a private vehicle?+

Yes — walking is often easiest to arrange on a private vehicle because the schedule isn't shared with other guests.

Can children come on a private vehicle?+

Yes, and that is one of the main reasons families upgrade. Most lodges relax minimum-age restrictions for private-vehicle bookings.

How early should I book a private safari?+

Six months for shoulder season, twelve months for peak season, eighteen months for exclusive-use at the top camps.
