Lesedi Cultural Village
Lesedi — meaning ‘light’ in Sesotho — is a living cultural village set in the hills of the Cradle of Humankind, where five recreated traditional homesteads introduce visitors to Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Sotho and Ndebele culture in a single afternoon.
The village was built in 1994 and is staffed by people from each of the five represented groups, many of whom live on site in the traditional homesteads. The format is part guided tour, part interactive performance: you are welcomed at the boma with a multi-language Africa film, then walked from kraal to kraal as residents explain their architecture, marriage traditions, weapons, beadwork and daily life in their own languages with translation.
The Zulu homestead is a circle of beehive grass huts dominated by the chief's residence. The Xhosa kraal uses ochre-painted rondavels and explains the rite-of-passage ceremonies that shaped Mandela's own childhood. The Pedi village shows the brightly painted murals that gave Ndebele art its global reputation. The Sotho homestead is built into the hillside with stone, and the Basotho hut is the only one you may enter to sit inside.
The cultural experience builds to a 45-minute song and dance performance in the arena — gumboot dancing, Zulu warrior choreography, Tsonga acrobatics — followed by a buffet lunch or dinner in the Nyama Choma restaurant, with traditional dishes like umngqusho, mogodu and pap alongside game meats and a vegetarian selection.
Lesedi also offers traditional overnight stays in en-suite rondavels styled in each of the five cultures. The rooms are modern and comfortable inside but architecturally faithful, and the rate includes the cultural tour, dinner, breakfast and the evening performance.
Practical info: day visits run at 11:30 and 16:30 daily, last about three hours including a meal, and cost around R645 per adult and R325 per child. The village is 45 minutes from Sandton or Johannesburg via the N14, and combines easily with Maropeng and the Sterkfontein Caves on a Cradle of Humankind day tour.
