Overview

What to expect on your Soweto Tour

Soweto is not a museum. It is a living, working South African community of more than a million people — and the birthplace of much of the country's freedom story. This private Soweto tour is designed to tell that story properly: the 1976 student uprising, the years Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu lived one street apart, and the everyday township culture that continues today.

Your driver-guide picks you up from your Johannesburg or Sandton hotel — or from OR Tambo or Lanseria Airport — and takes you into Soweto in an air-conditioned private vehicle. You'll walk Vilakazi Street, step inside Mandela House, stand at the Hector Pieterson Memorial where the June 16 uprising began, see the iconic Orlando Towers, and (highly recommended) combine Soweto with the Apartheid Museum for one of the most complete apartheid-history days available anywhere.

This tour is respectful, not poverty-tourism. We work with Soweto-based partners, spend money in the community, and give you the historical and cultural context to understand what you're seeing rather than just photographing it.

Frequently asked questions

Questions guests ask before booking

Is the Soweto Tour private?
Yes. Every Soweto tour is fully private. You are the only guests in the vehicle with your own driver-guide, and the day is shaped around your interests and the pace you want.
How long is the Soweto Tour?
A typical private Soweto tour with the Apartheid Museum runs 8 to 10 hours from pickup to drop-off. A shorter half-day version (Soweto only, no Apartheid Museum) runs 4 to 5 hours if you have less time.
Does the tour include Vilakazi Street?
Yes. Vilakazi Street is a standard stop on every Soweto tour we run — you'll have time to walk the street, take photos and stop for lunch or a drink at a local restaurant.
Is Mandela House included?
Mandela House is included as a stop and highly recommended. Entrance to the museum is paid separately on the day (R150 adult / R60 child).
Are entrance fees included?
No. Entrance fees are paid separately on the day and depend on which sites you choose to enter (Mandela House, Hector Pieterson Museum, Apartheid Museum). We list current prices next to each stop.
Can we add the Apartheid Museum?
Yes — and we strongly recommend it. Combining Soweto with the Apartheid Museum in one day is the single best way to understand South Africa's apartheid story. It fits comfortably in an 8–10 hour day.
Is Soweto safe to visit with a guide?
Yes. With a professional driver-guide and a planned route, a private guided Soweto tour is the safest and most comfortable way to visit. Our guides know the community, the safe stops, and how to keep the day relaxed for you.
Can I be picked up from Sandton or OR Tambo?
Yes. Complimentary pickup and drop-off is included from all Johannesburg and Sandton hotels, from OR Tambo International Airport and from Lanseria International Airport.
