Ukutula — Walk with the Lions

Ukutula — meaning ‘place of quiet’ in Zulu — is a long-established lion conservation and research centre on a 100-hectare reserve near Brits, an hour from Johannesburg, that pairs hands-on big-cat experiences with an active genetics research programme.

Ukutula opened in 1978 and is one of the older predator facilities in South Africa. It is registered as a research centre and has partnerships with the University of Pretoria, the Smithsonian and several international veterinary schools for work on lion genome sequencing, reproductive science and disease research — the centre's lion DNA databank is one of the largest in the world.

The visitor experience runs in tiers. The Conservation Tour is the gentlest option: a guided walk through the reserve where you observe the resident lions, cheetah, white tigers and other species from outside the enclosures while staff explain the research and breeding work. The Cub Interaction adds supervised time with hand-raised cubs during cub season. The Lion Walk pairs guests over 16 with one or two sub-adult lions on a 45-minute walk through the bush with several rangers in attendance.

Ukutula has been transparent about the ethical questions around captive lion interactions and now markets itself primarily as a research and education facility rather than as a sanctuary. None of its lions are sold into hunting and the centre publishes a regular research and welfare report.

On-site there is a 22-room thatched lodge, a swimming pool, a restaurant and a small bar. Day visitors can have a buffet lunch in the dining room after their tour, and overnight guests get the lion experience included in their rate plus a sundowner game drive.

Practical info: Ukutula is open daily for booked visitors from 08:30 to 16:30. Conservation Tours start at around R450 per adult and rise depending on the level of interaction. The centre is 60 minutes from Sandton via the N14 and the R512, and we visit it as part of a Cradle of Humankind day tour or as a standalone half-day from Johannesburg.

Entry: R1,400 per person
